The Top 40 Basketball Movies - #4. The Way Back

The Top 40 Basketball Movies - #4. The Way Back
The Way Back
Not to be confused with the 2010 Ed Harris vehicle The Way Back or The Way Way Back with Sam Rockwell (that I also really enjoyed). Technically a tie with Coach Carter numbers wise but it gets the tie-breaking nudge from me. Similar Rotten Tomatoes audience score but much higher critic score though slightly lower IMDB. I do believe it belongs in the 5-10 range of basketball movies. It left a good taste in my mouth when it was over. I think I would really have to revisit it again to appreciate it more. The movie was definitely not all roses. It hits it's themes, especially alcoholism over the head. It really helps that Ben Affleck is so likable. Ben Affleck actually was going through alcohol rehab just prior to this movie. It feels like it's missing something in the beginning, the first scene with Jack's family didn't really feel right. You eventually find out that Jack had lost his wife and child which starts him down this road. Similar concept to so many of these movies including Coach Carter, great high school player comes back to coach. The team starts playing better under Jack's tutelage but eventually gets done in by his vice. My favorite scenes happen off the court, in one of them Jack goes to see a boy's father at work about going to watch his son play. In another, Jack gets drunk and wanders into someone else's home. Not familiar with the writer but the director Gavin O'Connor is no stranger to sports movies as his resume includes Miracle and Warrior. The only other actor I recognize - Melvin Gregg, also did High Flying Bird. It definitely is a step above a generic sports movie. I don't think it's as good as White Men Can't Jump, BASEketball or even Above the Rim for me at this point but deserves to be in the conversation with Coach Carter, Glory Road, and Believe in Me as similar movies.

50 Favorite Adult Swim Characters

I tried to get a good variety and yet be fair to what I like the most. I'm sure there are one I've missed and some that might be surprising but if it aired on Adult Swim - I can use it. I didn't use any characters from either Robot Chicken or Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! as they are basically clip shows and while good, the re-occurring characters aren't used enough. Also, it turns out H. Jon Benjamin is the voice for half these shows. 50. Chains     Fat Guy Stuck in Internet 49. Assy McGee    Assy McGee H. Jon Benjamin plays the mayor. 48. The Mayor    Tom Goes to the Mayor A Picture of Jeff Goldbloom instead of the Mayor, but this was by far the funniest thing on the show. 47. Inuyasha    Inuyasha 46. Satan     Lucy: The Daughter of the Devil Wears Bill Cosby sweaters and is always trying to kill his daughters boyfriend DJ Jesus. Yeah... One of the H. Jon Benjamin voices...

Vexing Devil Giving an opponent a choice is never a good idea. However I really feel like it's win win here in the aggressive deck. A 4/3 for one will almost always be worth a card. So the real question is - is it worth a card to deal 4 damage for a red? It's not quite Flame Slash good in a control deck, or as great top deck as Thunderous Wrath but better than Thunderbolt or Lava Axe . 19. Scute Mob Not a true one drop. But by turn six hopefully you are going get a hydra-like insect that will quickly get insanely huge if not dealt with. My biggest issue is that it doesn't have trample. It's still a great costed creature that can do some work if unchecked. There are lots of ways to give it Trample in Green not named Rancor . 18. Dragonmaster Outcast And yet another non-true o...
