In celebration of the NBA lottery tonight and the start of the conference finals, I will start counting down -
The Top 40 Basketball movies.
I watched 35 movies for this marathon, the other 5 I've watched too many times or couldn't sit through again – BASEketball, Semi-Pro, Space Jam for example.
It's a pretty comprehensive list. I could have gotten to 50, but it would have been very painful to sit through things like – Space Jam 2: A New Legacy, The Sixth Man, My Giant.
Baseball had it so much easier finding movies, maybe I'll do all sports next and get some Foosball and Puck in there.
Some films were not possible to stream and I wasn't paying full price to buy and wait for them – The Basketball Diaries, Wolves, The Might Macs, Three Seconds. Not being able to stream/rent something is the same problem that going to Blockbuster or Family Video back in the day and not finding what you want have. It just feels more wrong when you can't find something these days.
A couple of them, Cornbread, Earl and Me; Celtic Pride and That Championship Season all interested me, but didn't seem like a ton of basketball. Though actual Basketball was not a requirement of this list, they didn't seem like they could hold my attention either.
Last three on the bubble were The Hot Flashes, Crossover and Just Wright.
None of the ones I haven't watched have a positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes and only Basketball Diaries had over a 7 on IMDB.
#40. Eddie
I like Whoopi in Ghost, Sister Act. Heck it feels like she's playing the same character in each movie. Not that this movie is all her fault, but it's not a good one. The owner is playing the role of secret Grinch who wants to move the team and can only be stopped by a rousing speech at the end, the power of NY love and good basketball. It's not a terrible premise, though it doesn't make much sense either. Little Big League did the fish out of water managing story better. It wasn't funny to me, the basketball wasn't great for being one of the few movies on this list about actual NBA stars. The team only starts getting good when Eddie(the supposed super fan) starts taking an interest in them. There will be other bad movies on here, but this one gets the cake.
